Middle School Newsletter

                                                                  January 2009

From Sarah Burdett:

Welcome back! The numerous events in December served as reminders of the endless talents of our Middle School boys. The Eighth Graders showed tremendous poise and maturity during their FCD workshop with their parents. The cast and crew of Peter Pan quite literally brought our drama program to new heights as they sang, danced, and flew across the stage. Our Middle School instrumentalists dazzled us all with a program that showcased both their individual and collective talents. Our choral groups harmonized beautifully in their concert and put us all in the holiday spirit. In both our Sports Awards Assemblies and Honors Assembly, we stopped to recognize the athletic and academic achievements of many of our boys. All in all, we commend the Middle School students on the discipline, diligence, and determination that they show in every aspect of their Brunswick School lives. We hope they all enjoyed a well-deserved rest over the holidays.

Dismissal Procedures: Middle School pick up and drop off procedures are as follows. The lane closest to the curb is where students should enter and exit from vehicles. The outside lane must be for passing only. If you must get out of your car for any reason during pick up or drop off, you must park your car by the Sampson Athletic Center. You may not exit your car during pick up or drop off if you are parked in front of the MS building. The boys will be reminded of this procedure as well and will make an effort to get out to the pick up line as quickly as possible at the end of the day. In the spring yellow lines will be painted to make the pick up/drop off and the passing zones clear. Thank you for your patience as we follow this routine.

The Second Trimester Mid-Point:  On Friday, January 16th we reach the mid-point of the Second Trimester.  Teachers will assess the progress of each boy at this point and, as in the First Trimester, write comments discussing both strengths and weaknesses. Your son’s advisor will call if your son is experiencing difficulty (“C-“ average or below, or “1” Effort grades), or if they have any other information they would like to share.  As at the end of the first trimester, these comments will be emailed home. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call.

7th & 8th Grade Dance at Greenwich Academy: As they are every January, our boys have been invited to a mid-winter dance at GA.  The dance will take place in the GA Dining Hall, on Friday, January 23rd, and will begin at 7:00pm and end promptly at 9:00pm. Please make arrangements to pick up the boys on time.

MS Student Council Ski Trip: This year’s student council has worked diligently to plan a ski trip at Butternut Mountain in Massachusetts for all interested MS students. On Saturday, January 24th, a bus will leave from the Pre School at approximately 7:00am and return to the preschool around 6:15pm. The cost of the trip should be approximately $70 per student. A more detailed letter with sign-up information will be emailed home. Sign-up sheets are due in the MS Office by January 6th. We look forward to a great day of skiing!

Snow Bulletin REMINDER:  If there is a delayed opening or a school cancellation due to bad weather, we will make every attempt to use the Brunswick automated messaging system.  Parents may also check the Brunswick School website (www.brunswickschool.org), tune into your local radio stations (WGCH or WSTC), or call the school after 6:00am on the main number (203-625-5800) for cancellation or delay information.

M.L.K. Assembly: On Wednesday, January 28th, there will be an all-school assembly to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
