A Message From The Headmaster

Message from the Headmaster on Diversity

One of Brunswick's collective and grounding beliefs, as stated by founder George Carmichael, has been to "ably and generously prepare young men for life". In so doing we must strive to prepare them in a school setting that both reflects the diversity of the larger community in which we live and at the same time prepares them, as best as we are able, for the evenbroader diversity they will inevitably encounter when they graduate.

As I consider the truly excellent colleges and universities at which so many of our graduates matriculate, it is difficult, if not impossible, to name a single one which, along with being reflective of the intellectual strength of our nation, is not also reflective of the bounty of diversity which defines us as a country.

The different experiences and perspectives offered in a community that welcomes and supports students, faculty and parents from differing racial, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds make all aspects of the community richer. At its essence, diversity means an appreciation of the defining differences found amongst us. Those differences, in turn, serve to make us all collectively more interesting as well as interested, in all we do.

As we strive to be the best we can be and to serve our boys and our community in an environment of excellence, we must always continue to "enhance" our educational experience. Increased awareness about the importance of diversity is, I think we would all agree, an essential enhancement to our short and long term success as an institution.

Finally, as must be true for all enhancements to an already wonderful and unique school community, we will, in all things, continue to seek and foster the goodness of character and spirit which typifies the "Brunswick Boy"whatever his race, his background, his religion or his family's economic standing.

--- Thomas W. Philip, Headmaster
